With everyone on their laptops, iPads and smart phones these days, you might be surprised that participants in workshops, course training and presentations still like to have an old school handout. Here’s why…
Sit Back and Listen.
Who wants to be fussing around trying to type extensive notes during a presentation? You aren’t going to absorb what is being said next if you are staring at your screen. A handout is knowing you can relax and concentrate on what is being taught, knowing you already have the notes to refer to later.
Prevent Information Overload
Extra tips and information can be included in a handout so that the presentation doesn’t get bogged down with too much info.
Follow Along and Make Short Notes
Handouts are also the best place to follow the presentation and the best spot to insert your own brief notes and remarks for later. Circle and underline important points or items you have questions about. We always make sure to leave space in our handouts for your notes.
Handouts are Part of the Presentation
If I’m doing a remote training, I always email the client handouts of what was covered in the course so they can concentrate on the course during our time together and not worry that they have to take notes.
Refresh and Relearn
Not everything is going to get absorbed during the presentation, it’s handy to have a handout to refer to later to help the information learned truly sink in.
Contacts and Questions
I always make sure my contact information is clearly visible so people can get in touch easily with follow-up questions.
How Do You Make Handouts Appealing?
I like to use lots of screenshots as I know my clients find those visuals most helpful. Keep the structure and typeface clean and make sure the most important content is clearly visible and easily understandable. Have someone proofread them for you and give you an honest opinion!
Just the other day I came across someone asking if anyone had any handouts on a particular software application to give to their client who had asked for some form of handout pertaining to the software. I told them, yep, you gotta have a handout!
